Front of building moving right along!

Well!!!! It is the middle of November and work is still going on in front of the building. Now I was told when this project started in May that it would probably be done and over with sometime in August. But dummy me. I forgot to ask, "what year"? Seriously though, I don't think it's going to get finished by the time the snow flies because then it will be too cold to work, it will be too windy, blah blah blah.... So, I am predicting that phase 1 of the front of the building will be finished by August of 2011 and just maybe the 2nd phase will start in May of 2011. All of this may change subject to the planets, the alignment of the stars, which way the wind blows on most days on the first thursday of the month, and if the sun doesn't shine midnight on December 31st then and only then maybe this project will get finished. Welcome Back Joe Leuzzi

Hip hip hooray!!!!! He's back! For those of you that may not know Joe Leuzzi, he is maintenance man/janitor/jack of all trades. He has been out on a medical leave because he had a heart valve replaced and he is doing wonderfully. However, he moos periodically probably because he got a valve from a cow. He's moooovelous!

The Lorain Palace Theater has marked another successful year of summer youth theater! July 30th, 31st, and August 1st, the Lorain Palace Youth Theater celebrated its 33rd year with a production of The Wizard of Oz. More than seventy students ages eight to eighteen participated in the three shows. Each night the theater was filled to its licensed capacity of 650 people! The shows went wonderfully, but that is only half of the program. The other half is the six weeks prior to the show, when students are taught all aspects of theater- costumes, props, lights, sets, acting, dancing, and safety. Lorain Palace Theater Executive Director, John Handyside, would like to thank the parents for sharing their children and thank the staff for their time and effort. "They've just been stellar. The best in thirty-three years!" says John. Jessica Smith has been the producer of the Palace Youth Theater for five years. She says, "This has been the BEST show overall. The cast, crew, staff, sets, costumes, EVERYTHING came together beautifully to create a professional, Broadway show. I'm so proud of everyone's hard work and determination during those six short weeks, and I hope PYT continues to raise the bar on children's theatre, and continue to bring the community together through the arts."

Valerie Smith has volunteered her sewing skills for various projects at the Lorain Palace Theater for many years. She sewed vests for the theater ushers; sewed and assembled the 48-foot long table skirt for the 2009 Polar Express train layout in the marble lobby; and organized the Palace Youth Theater (PYT) costume room. During her summer vacations she has sewed costumes for the PYT productions of Honk, Jr., Willy Wonka, Jr., Seussical the Musical, Peter Pan and The Wizard of Oz. Valerie is a Public Services Coordinator for the Lorain Public Library System. She has worked as a librarian at the Main Library in Lorain since 1974.

Lorain International Parade

We participated in the Lorain International Parade. First of all, thanks to Brittany Chapman for saying, at the beginningo of the summer, "Hey! We need to be in the parade!" And thanks to Amanda Rubino and Stephanie Cherpak for the decorations and dressing all of the princesses up. And of course, thanks to Suzanne Tansey for the tank. No, really she has a nice SUV and we got to decorated it. As you can see from the pictures and the slideshow, the Palace Princesses were a big hit! They are already scheming as to what they are going to do next year.

Graduations and Recognitions

Since 1981, Brookside High School has been graduating from the Lorain Palace Theater stage. Since then, Clearview High School and the Lorain County JVS have also started doing their graduation and recognition ceremonies at the Lorain Palace Theater. The theater takes the graduation ceremony to a higher level than when it is held on a football field or in a gym-a-cafe-torium on hard bleacher seats. Of course, it also helps to be inside and climate controlled (air conditioning). The students from Brookside and Clearview sit on the stage, where they are all visible to their parents and family.

Thanks to the Lorain Police, who block off Braodway so that graduates and their families can gather for photos after the ceremony.

79th Annual Lorain Community Memorial Service

Sponsored by the Lorain Memorial Association, the 79th Annual Lorain Community Memorial Service took place at the Lorain Palace Theater, Sunday, May 30th, at 2:00 p.m., under the direction of Jane Baran, president of the Lorain Memorial Association. This event has been taking place here, at the Lorain Palace Theater for well over 30 years. It has been an honor for us to have them here. It is probably one of the nicest memorial services in northern Ohio. The part that really gets to everybody is the "Roll Call of the Departed." The best summation was by the Honorable Mayor Anthony Krasienko, of Lorain, when he cited that the opportunity for our freedoms comes soley from our veterans and the young men and women currently serving this country. The Memorial Service is a one-hour program. I encourage everyone to take the time to come and honor the vets with us next year!

New stairs on the front of the stage THANKS TO LORAIN COUNTY JVS.

"Wow! These are fantastic! As you can see, they have lights on every step. I'm about 6' 5", and the handrails are comfortable for me! So, you can just imagine how comfortable they will be for everyone who needs to go up and down from the stage during a show or during an event here at the theater. Theatre Etiquette

If you have been to a movie at the Lorain Palace Theater recently, you may have noticed a new addition to the pre-movie entertainment. We now have a short, silent film parody that demonstrates proper theater etiquette. Starring in the two and a half minute film, the staff of the Lorain Palace Theater kindly reminds guests to turn off their cell phones, take crying babies to the lobby, and keep their feet off the seats, among other things. And, of course, Mr. Handyside reminds guests to enjoooooyyyy the movie!

The Front-of-the-Theater Work Begins!

First, we at the Lorain Palace Theater would like to thank the City of Lorain Community Development Dept. and the state of Ohio, Ohio Cultural Facilities Commission for helping us get **grants** for the refurbishing of the front of the building. Second, we wouldl ike to thank Gary Fisher, from Arkinetics, for volunteering his time and expertise. Our goal is to return to the original look of the Palace Theater in 1928, including the marquee with a small blade. But, for now, the focus is on the front of the building, also known as the facade.Joe Leuzzi, the Palace Theater's head of maintenance and jack-of-all-trades, uncovers a beautiful white wall, behind the current brown one.A fellow worker removes grout in the original wall, so that new grouting can be done.

Hard at work, Joe removes the current floor to reveal the original Terrazzo tile. The original Terrazzo tile, exposed.

This octagon outlines the original box office, which the Palace plans to recreate.

Lorain Palace Youth Theater

The Lorain Palace hosts the longest running youth theater in Lorain Country, The Lorain Palace Youth Theater, which has been consistently producing summer programs for the past thirty years! Have you ever wanted to act in a play, build a set, or apply stage makeup? Well, the Summer Youth Theatre may be for you! Children ages eight to eighteen can enroll in this summer theater workshop. Kids will learn about the theater, work in groups to design sets and costumes, and end the summer by performing in their own production! Past performances have included shows such as "Honk! Jr.," "Wonka," and "Peter Pan." Children meet daily from 9:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., except on Tuesdays, when they are released early so they can catch the Summer Fun Movie series at the Palace. Lorain Palace Theater's First Midnight Movie

The Lorain Palace Theater opened for its first midnight movie, showing Ironman 2! With over 200 people in attendence, John Handyside, executive director, was quite pleased with the turnout. "I was hoping for at least 150 people, and was quite surprised when we hit the 200 mark and then went over!" (John Handyside). The Lorain Palace Theater has been getting more aggressive about getting first run movies. It is difficult for us because we have to keep them for three weeks, and, as you know, we don't just show movies here, we also do live shows. So, the scheduling is sometimes a problem.
